STEP 1 - Acceptance - Amethyst We admitted we were powerless over alcohol — that our lives had become unmanageable.

  • Amethyst - is the First Step stone because it symbolizes Sobriety and Abstinence from any substance.
  • Citrine - Success in any new endeavor - promotes a positive outcome
  • Peridot - Detoxing: Nice stone for someone in their first year. Processes, Releases and neutralizes toxins on all levels.
  • Tiger Eye - Newcomers, people who are easily distracted, adults with A.D.D. or who are Manic/Depressive, emotionally immature people, procrastinators, people in emotional turmoil, people in transitional states, need this stone, as it grounds them as soon as they are in its presence. If you feel nervous, anxious, or fearful much of the time, this is a great stone for you.
You could also use any of these Acceptance Stones for the First Step:
  • Chrysocolla, Apatite, Chrysoprase , Turquoise, Tiger Iron, Blue Quartz, Carnelian

Step 2 - Faith - Peridot Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

This step speaks of opening the door to the possibility of SOMETHING that can do for us that which we can not do for ourselves. No ACTION is required here, but rather the belief that the possibility exists that we do not have all the answers, or we would not be here.Within this step lies HOPE that there IS a way out. (Green is the color of Hope and Re-Birth) Help with this step:

  • Peridot - A good first "Spiritual Stone" for people who have not yet had a spiritual awakening, or are having trouble relating to a "Higher Power" as it helps people who are having trouble relating to the reality of a world beyond the physical world, or that some outside influence is willing to support and aid.
  • Citrine - Opens the mind to new ideas
  • Golden Topaz - Helps to initiate faith and further the quest for the enlightened state.

Step 3 - Surrender - Smokey Quartz Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.

This is an ACTION step. It is about making a choice.

  • Azurite - Known as "The Stone of Heaven", it promotes the pursuit of the Spirit. Azurite is a BEACON. A lantern in the darkness... Azurite is also a stone for "Letting Go"... of old behavior, old patterns, old way of seeing the world.
  • Smokey Quartz - It helps to set aside willfulness (turning over our own self will) and headstrong behavior.
  • Ruby - The Stone of Wise Choices, helping you to make decisions that lead to your Ultimate good.
  • Black Onyx - Excellent stone for initiating the process of centering and alignment of the total person with a Higher Power. It helps us to absorb whatever energy we need from the Universe.

Step 4 - Honesty - Turquoise Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

Help with this step:

  • Apatite helps us to see the truth about ourselves.Turquoise - A truth stone, it symbolizes a time to be honest with yourself. Much will be gained when you become still, and see yourself as your truly are. This stone is a reminder to share your vision and WALK your TALK! This step is not a "think it" step... its a "DO IT!" step. The truth is very motivating to those ready to hear it. By doing so, you make it okay for them to believe and follow.
  • Obsidian - Personal Insight - Its mirror like surface reveals its special ability to act as a mirror and help you see your own flaws honestly. It doesn't abandon you there, but will also provide insight into correcting those flaws.

Step 5 - Courage - Carnelian Admitted to God, to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.

This step calls for some courage. To believe we will still be loved. To walk forward in spite of fear. To take the ACTION of selecting one to whom we will bare our soul. It also is a motivator, as this step seems to be on that many people procrastinate about taking, and can be stuck on this step a long time.Help with this step:

  • Sodalite - Eliminates Shame, Fear and Guilt better than any other stone! Many times, shame, guilt and fear of revealing our past to another human being will hold someone back from being able to take this step.
  • Malachite - This is particularly useful for people on a spiritual path, or in recovery, for releasing guilt from past events that are hazy or difficult to remember.
  • Carnelian - Stone of Action
  • Courage - Agates, Tiger Eye, Aquamarine, Bloodstone, Citrine

Step 6  - Willingness  -  Fluorite Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character. Help with this step:

  • Fluorite - Letting Go of Defects: builds purity of spirit and helps to clarify those aspects of our spiritual nature that it is time to release and let go, as they no longer serve our higher good.
  • Charoite - Change, in behavior, in acceptance of need to change
  • Blue or Golden Topaz - Helpful in correcting unwanted, unloving behavior patterns.

Step 7  - Humility  - Quartz Crystal Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.

  • Clear Quartz - The symbol of Universal Wisdom, and Healing. This stone amplifies heart felt prayers, wishes and positive visualizations. Keeps you in touch with your spiritual side, and reminds you that you are a spiritual being, having a human experience. All spiritual pursuits can be stimulated and amplified using this stone's energy. It helps you to be receptive to higher guidance.

Step 8  - Forgiveness  - Agate or Peridot Made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all.

I personally believe the hardest part of "becoming willing" in this step is letting go of the resentments, anger, and bitterness we feel toward the very people we are trying to make the amends to. Rationalization, justification, and self righteous anger can keep us stuck on this step a long time.Help with this step:

  • All Agates: Blue Lace, White Lace, and Moss Agate,
  • Forgiveness: Moss Agate, Amethyst, Rhodochrosite
  • Resentments: Agates
  • Bitterness - Agates
  • Peridot - Helps us deal with anger, jealousy, envy, and other strong emotions particularly in relationships with others, which might get in our way or "becoming willing" to make amends to those people. In healing these past hurts, and getting these strong emotions under control, we begin to see the part we played in any given situation on a more detached intellectual level rather than an emotional level.

Step 9 - Freedom  - Rose Quartz or SodaliteMade direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

I believe this step becomes possible when love replaces anger, fear, and guilt. The process of amends releases the burden of guilt and remorse we have carried for so long, and finally sets us FREE. This is the step that gives you WINGS.Help with this step:

  • Rose Quartz - Kindness - Opens our hearts and encourages us to be tender, peaceful and gentle. Teaches forgiveness and tolerance.
  • Sodalite - Eliminates Shame, Fear and Guilt better than any other stone! Many times, shame, guilt and fear of revealing our past to another human being will hold someone back from being able to take this step.
  • Fear (Overcoming) - Citrine, Smoky Quartz, Rhodochrosite, Black Tourmaline, Rhodonite, Amethyst, Azurite-Malachite, Black Onyx, Rose Quartz, Silver Grey Moonstone, Snowflake Obsidian
  • Tolerance of Others - Amethyst, Chrysoprase

Step 10  - Perseverance  - Snowflake Obsidian or Pearls Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.

  • Obsidian - Ego - Obsidian is an "ego buster" - reveling the truth about ourselves in a none too gentle manner. Sometimes, an illness can be treated with medication, and other times, surgery is required. Obsidian cuts through all our defenses and exposes us naked to ourselves. Wear obsidian to stay "right size". Obsidians forceful dose of cutting reality can be softened if necessary for shy or timid people by combining it with Aventurine, Rose Quartz, or Chrysocolla.
  • The other alternative is to use Snowflake Obsidian, which has many of the same properties but a softer touch.
  • Pearls - Understanding - Pearls symbolize the best within us. Honesty, Purity, Wisdom and Integrity. They remind us to walk with Dignity. Pearls not only provide a mirror in which to see ourselves, but give us insight into how we appear to others.

Step 11  - Patience - Iolite (Water Sapphire) or Turquoise Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.

  • Meditation stones are Water and Air stones: Dark Green, Blue, Indigo, or Purple Iolite - Higher Awareness - One of its primary functions is to stimulate us as spiritual beings, guiding us to a higher awareness, and awakening us to the inner knowledge that so patiently waits within each of us.
  • Turquoise - Native cultures held the belief that by wearing it the human mind becomes one with the universe.
  • Azurite - improves communication with the spiritual world. (thereby promoting conscious contact) Kyanite - If you have difficulty in sitting still, your mind drifting to you current worries, or being distracted while meditating,
  • Kyanite is one of the best stones to use. Its ability to calm and quiet the chattering, busy mind is unequaled.
  • Jade - Meditation - Jade is said to encourage self-realization and help us to recognize ourselves as spiritual beings.
  • Serenity - Aquamarine
  • Balance - Aquamarine, Green Aventurine,

Step 12  - Love  -  Labradorite or Azurite Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

  • Labradorite - The FLASH will remind you of this stones purpose. Like "a flash of light in the darkness", Labradorite will help reveal your spiritual destiny to you. Labradorite brings forth each person's strengths to share with the world, and each other. (to carry the message... to those who still suffer...)
  • Azurite - Not only does it help you to understand spiritual ideals, but also helps you to communicate those ideas to others in a way that other people can understand.
  • Dumortierite: It will assist you in communicating spiritual concepts to others and better understanding unusual or mystical events you experience.
  • Enhance Communication Skills to Carry the Message: Aquamarine

AA Symbol

"Above us floats a banner on which is inscribed the new
[July 1955] symbol for A.A., a circle enclosing a triangle.  The circle stands for the whole world of A.A., and the triangle stands for A.A.'s Three Legacies of Recovery, Unity, and Service.  Within our wonderful new world, we have found freedom from our fatal obsession.  That we have chosen this particular symbol is perhaps no accident.  The priests and seers of antiquity regarded the circle enclosing the triangle as a means of warding off spirits of evil, and A.A.'s circle and triangle of Recovery, Unity, and Service has certainly meant all of that to us and much more." c. 1985, Alcoholics Anonymous Comes of Age, page 139

SobrietyStones.com

SobrietyStones - Anonymous Jewelry for Anonymous People! Discrete "Go Anywhere" Sobriety Anniversary Jewelry that continues to honor the tradition of anonymity for members of any 12 Step Program.

SobrietyStones is symbolic jewelry based on the ancient meaning of stones, and how they are applied to the 12 Steps through spiritual practice and "principles of right living" as suggested in the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous. (and other 12 Step and Spiritual programs)

One of the reasons I created SobrietyStones was to make anniversary jewelry for people in recovery that didn't have an AA or NA symbol on it that would prevent them from wearing it freely to work or church.

The traditional symbols of recovery are so well known now, with TV and the Internet, that many people have choses not to wear such obvious symbols in public. (in keeping with the Anonymous principal).

Therfore, I do not often use the traditional triangle or squares of "official" AA , NA, or Ala non Jewelry, but am willing to do os upson request. :)

We do offer unique items like the "Serenity Prayer Bracelet", "12 Step Necklace or Bracelet", "Came to Believe" bracelet, "The Sobriety Bracelet" , "Dual Addiction" bracelets, and jewelry for success and prosperity, or protection from negative influences, like "people, places, and things".

Custom jewelry can be created for AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) NA (narcotics anonymous) alanon, OE (Overeaters Anonymous) EA (Emotions Anonymous) ACOA (Adult Children of Alcoholics) GA (Gamblers Anonymous)

"Serenity is not freedom from the storm but peace amid the storm”
“Sobriety Circle & Triangle: The three sided triangle represents the three part answer to addiction: "unity", "recovery" and "service" to a three part disease - physical, mental and spiritual, while the circle represents wholeness or oneness.
