The First Step:
Stones for Acceptance (Surrender)
Of all the things, I think this very first step is the
hardest. Coming to terms with what you are, and what
you have become. How can a heart face such total
devastation?
The wisdom of two men so long ago shows you the path.
They could have recovered, held their head high, and
walked tall. How tempting to leave all that mess
behind, never to look back.
So many times we are tempted to say "Great, now I can
just get on with my life..and walk away from the that
which give us back our very souls.
The most amazing thing that you discover when facing
this first step, is that you are not alone. There
are more people than you can count who have taken hours,
days, and years out of their life, to hold out their hands
to you.
They dont just say "Do this".
They take your hand, and pull you to their side, and
then, slowly, with infinite patience, they point and say "Go slowly, but take your
fist step here. And only when you have regained your
balance from that first great leap, do they say "and now,
step here". And so it goes, step by step.
If you will cling to their strength and hope, you will
not falter. And thus it goes, day by day.
they do not say "Do this!". They say "Here... take
my hand! FOLLOW ME. WALK WHERE I MYSELF HAVE
WALKED. And so you BOTH move forward...
And when you feel steady, when the light begins to
shine in your eyes, and there is a bit of spring back in
your step... when you feel the hope return... they tell
you "NOW. Turn around. Look behind you."
"Hold
out your hand."
And now the student has become the teacher.
